Oct 17, 2003 411 Question of the week... The 411 Question of the Week comes from Gabe Malek, who writes "How do you work on getting the rights to music?"
So I went to David Gillanders, the guy who works on the music licensing around here, and asked him...here's what he had to say...
"In order for a song to be used in a skateboard video, you have to acquire two forms of written permission, master rights, and synchronization rights. The master is the recording of the song, and the synchronization is the actual written song, the music and/or words. If the band has a deal with a record label, chances are the label owns the master rights, and the band controls the synchronization rights. No matter what though, you have to have both of those elements for it to be legal. I'd ask the band and the record label who controls which, they should know. It's a complicated process, and can be difficult, but we manage to pull it off."
Check out this photo I took in David's office...its the 411 music library..we get a lotta CD's here.
