Hurley In Hawaii, Day 4

Hurley in Hawaii, Day 4
Words by Aaron Astorga

For our last day on Oahu the crew wanted to check out the North Shore and I'm glad we did, if you go to Oahu in the winter you have to check out the North Shore, it's amazing. The surf was huge and out of control, the Monster Energy pro surf contest was scheduled to happen but the surf was just too big and sloppy so the contest was postponed for the day for cleaner conditions. Andre Genovesi, Sean Peterson, and our filmer little Richard woke up early to get a head start, Andre and I wanted to catch a surf session before we had to leave for the big island the next day so we pulled together one van's worth of the crew and we headed out to the country for our last day on Oahu. We didn't even make it to the Nimitz highway from the hotel before I had a total poo panic and had to make an emergency pull over into Zippy's resturant to blow up their toilet. I barely made it into the bathroom and when I finally got there only to find someone already on the toilet whistling like they were taking an afternoon stroll in the park. I was about to seriously shit my pants so I was forced to bolt for the women's bathroom, luckily nobody was in there when I walk in and was free to empty my bowels without worrying about making a bunch of hideous crapping noise. It's amazing how much better you feel after taking a serious dump.

Upon our arrival to on the North Shore it was evident that the surf was completely out of control. We first stopped to check out Puaena Point just across the channel from Haleiwa and it looked big and scary so we opted for a more manageable spot. Next spot we checked was Log Cabins, one of the heavier waves on the North Shore but it's sometimes a lot smaller when the swell is more West than North. Log Cabins was also big and closing out, it looked scary from the beach so it's safe to say once you get out there it's really heavy. We decided to check one more spot and right when we were walking up the trail back to the car these two guy's with big wave guns walked down the trail to paddle out. We had to check it out so we chilled for a few and watched these two warriors paddle through some super heavy shore break barely making it through to the outside. Turns out it was two notorious North Shore locals Garret Macnamerra and Dave Wassel. They paddled way out to outside rock pile which was probably in the 15 to 18 foot range, at that size and with the conditions not that great you have to be a bit crazy or really confident. Anyway, we lost site of them after a while so we decided to go check out Pipeline and see what it was looking like. When we got up to Pipeline which is about 5-6 hundred yards up the beach from Log Cabins it was twice the size of Log's and just out of control, the contest was off for the day and there was only a couple guys sitting way outside on second reef where you can take off when it's huge. After checking it out for a while and seeing some scary waves come through we noticed someone swimming in. We were tripping, who is this guy swimming out there right now? After a closer look we noticed who it was, broken leash, no board all the way from outside Log Cabins swam Garret Macnamerra. We were tripping on how he swam in from way outside in huge out of control surf, serious waterman shit. Anyway, we decided to check one more spot in hopes of catching a surf session so we went up to V land to check it out.

Once we got to V land we saw some manageable surf and a bunch of people out in the water so we grabbed some boards from Andre's friend's house and we were out in the water. The waves were a little mixed up but pretty fun, we surfed for about an hour before the rest of the crew showed up on the beach in time to see our last waves in to the beach. We were stoked we got a surf session before we had to leave despite the treacherous conditions and we were looking forward to spending the rest of the day over at Cholo's skating his epic pool and mini ramps. Cholo's is a little skate sanctuary just across the street from Pipeline. I came over to Oahu back in April and just last December for the North Shore Bowl Jam which was one of the coolest contests to date. It was great to ride Cholo's without all the hype and crowds and was a perfect way to spend our last day on Oahu skating some good concrete and shredding the fun mini ramps. We chilled at Cholo's 'til the sun went down and our time on Oahu was quickly coming to an end. Special thanks to Rod and the good folks at Blue Hawaii, our wonderful Hawaiian marketing man Grant Fakuda, Chad and Rob at APB and all the locals on Oahu who showed us Aloha during our stay, we look forward to coming back soon.
